My family recipes part 25Economy gold cake

2 cups of sifted cake flour
2 teaspoons of baking powder
One quarter teaspoon of salt
Half a cup of vegetable shortening
1 cup of granulated sugar
One half teaspoon of lemon extract
3 egg yolks
3 fourths of a cup of milk

Sift flour, measure then sift twice again with baking powder and salt. Cream shortening until soft and then add sugar gradually, beating until very light and fluffy. Add lemon extract. In separate bowl, beat egg yolks until thick and lemon colored; add gradually to sugar mixture, beating well. Add flour alternatively with milk, beating well after each addition until smooth. Bake in 2 greased 8-inch layer p

Rope dug into Patrick’s wrists as he struggled to free his hands. His hot, damp breath washed over his face, trapped by the fabric sack secured over his head.

A floorboard creaked. Patrick froze, his back rigid against the chair, and strained his ears. Another creak.
